Japanese Shin Gunto WWII - mei translation: Tsugu yoshi Saku (Tsuguyoshi made this) - Sho Wa Ju (10) Hachi (8) Nen (year) (meaning 18th year of Showa 18 or 1926 + 18 - 1 = 1943) Go (5) Gatsu (month) Hi (day) = a day in May. Measuring 36 1/2 inches overall, with a 25 3/4 inch blade showing a wavy hamon fitted into a silver finished copper habaki, military pattern brass tsuba and standard military gunto hilt fittings. Original olive brown military finished saya. The tang is extensively marked, with a 5-pointed Army star. Condition is overall very fine. The blade shows some light handling marks and a 3 tiny nicks in the blade and one rounded nick in the kissaki. The blade has with a strong complex wavy hamon and fine grain. The fittings show some mild wear, with a few stains on the wrap and a small area of absent rayskin near the retention catch. The saya is overall excellent with only minor paint loss and a few white scratches, likely from abrasions from a painted surface. $2500 excluding shipping.
